Sumati shivered as the icy Himalayan wind whipped through her thin salwar kameez, the fabric clinging damply to her skin from the long trek up the misty mountain path. At twenty-one, she had fled her suffocating village life— an abusive uncle, endless chores, and the looming threat of an unwanted marriage. The stories of this remote women’s ashram had reached her ears like a divine whisper: a place of peace, meditation, and refuge for lost souls. The sign at the weathered wooden gate read *Shanti Devi Ashram* in faded Devanagari script. She clutched her small bundle of belongings tighter and knocked.
The gate creaked open, revealing a tall, broad-shouldered man in his late thirties. His saffron robes hung loosely over a muscular frame honed by mountain labor. Deep-set eyes, a neatly trimmed beard, and a calm yet piercing gaze made him seem both guru-like and dangerously authoritative. This was Ramnath, the caretaker who managed the ashram alongside the reclusive Guru Ma.
